Who we are

Dr Nerys Owen

Director - Counselling Psychologist

I am a passionate, committed, and hard-working Counselling Psychologist wanting to bring to you a psychological service that meets all your needs. I began practicing as a Counselling Psychologist after a previous professional career in teaching. Leaving teaching over ten years ago, I realised my dream of becoming a psychologist, a position that I feel is a privilege, one that I never take for granted.

I now have a growing team of associates who all have their specialist areas, are talented psychologists and psychotherapists, who I either have worked with, know personally, or have come highly recommended. We are all experienced in working across a range of difficulties and age groups. Our goals as clinicians are to reduce your psychological distress (e.g. depression, anxiety, pain) to enhance and encourage psychological well-being.

My specialist areas are domestic violence and abuse. I have worked with many survivors of abuse and indeed my doctoral thesis and further research is in this area. My interest was developed from starting a therapeutic service in a women’s refuge back in 2014

I have met many inspirational women, along the way, and now work closely with Local Authorities to support women to re-build their lives, and the lives of their children in the aftermath of domestic abuse.

Complex trauma and PTSD is another area that I am a specialist in. I am an accredited EMDR practitioner and integrate this within my work. EMDR is an incredibly powerful and transformative therapy and often brings life-changing results.

I am an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist with over 12 years of experience working for the NHS. EMDR and Schema Therapy are other modalities I use where difficulties involve more longstanding patterns with emotional and/or other trauma-based origins.

Together with many years of formal training and developing expertise across a wide range of difficulties, I also have over 40 years’ experience of being a human being- thus a lived experience of emotional distress. I have completed and benefited from all the therapies I provide, which I feel is invaluable in truly empathising with what you may be going through and what might help (although everyone's experience is unique).

Therapy will involve recognising and understanding the patterns of difficulties you experience and the context in which they developed before working to challenge/break these patterns and manage those triggers in more adaptive ways going forward. Thus, allowing you to build up emotional resilience; confidence and well-being.

I have over 17 years’ experience of working in the NHS in mental health, and I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist 9 years ago. I have worked with older adults, adults and children. I have specialised in perinatal mental health, parenting and areas of parent-child relational/bonding and led on the set up and development of an innovative trauma informed, perinatal trauma and baby loss service.

I tend to work with people struggling with aspects of parenthood, people who are struggling with their relationships more broadly, life transitions and changes and people with traumatic experiences and difficulties in managing emotions.

I am passionate about my work and relationships with the people I work with. I endeavour to develop a supportive and safe space, balancing exploration and understanding, with ideas and steps towards change. I am hopeful, genuine and compassionate in my approach.

I am trained in CBT, CFT, EMDR, DBT, Video Interaction Guidance and the Incredible Years Parenting Programme. I draw on Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), which can inform my work with people who may be struggling in the way they relate to themselves or others.

Together, we would help make sense of the difficulties and consider what would be most helpful, to enable you to live a more meaningful life, in line with your values.

I am a HCPC registered clinical Psychologist currently working supporting NHS staff. I am committed to working with people from a non-judgemental stance of compassion and curiosity.

I have extensive experience supporting people with anxiety, depression, burn out and trauma. I work with people who feel lost, stuck and disconnected from the world around them. Traumatic events alter our identities and shatter our assumptions of the world and others. I am passionate about working with warmth to help individuals to find meaning, experience growth, and heal through connected togetherness. I can help people to live a life in line with their values and navigate challenges in relationships with boundaries, integrity and generosity.

I have experience of supporting survivors of rape, sexual abuse and those affected by vicarious and secondary trauma. I aim to help people understand normal responses to abnormal events. I integrate understandings from evolutionary psychology about how humans are wired and draw on evidence-based practice through a person-centred approach. I have also completed a PhD in Dementia and have over 10 years working with individuals and their carers to cope with loss, adjustment, transition, and grief.

I am trained in CBT, Compassion Focused Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy and EMDR. I am also a qualified coach, and I can draw on all of these skills to help you come up with a plan, take tangible steps and find the courage to take the action that matters most to you. I am humbled by the courage every person shows in seeking help and take care to foster trust within a therapeutic relationship.

I am a clinical psychologist and have an intermediate level accreditation in family therapy. I offer online therapy for individuals, families, couples and queer partnerships, and parent-child pairs.

In individual therapy, I use a trauma-informed approach based on compassionate and values-based therapeutic models which are strengths-based. I look forward to working with people towards better mental health, wellbeing, and living a meaningful thriving life.

In relational therapy, I focus on the different ways that people can relate with each other, such as: (a)romantic, (a)sexual, parenting, and family relationships. I use therapeutic approaches based on systemic thinking, focusing on the relationships between people, their social contexts, and the wider cultures that we find ourselves in. I look forward to working with people who wish to develop their communication and connection with each other – whether this be with partner(s), parent(s), or child(ren).

I am an Indian cis-gendered non-disabled queer woman, born in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and raised in the UK. Migration is a huge part of my lived experiences, due to which I am especially interested in the ways that language and culture influence and shape us throughout our lives.

I am a Counselling Psychologist with 12 years of experience working in private practice in South Africa. In 2020 my family and I relocated to the UK and since then I have been working in the NHS with adults experiencing complex emotional difficulties. I believe therapy can play an important part in the process of exploring and resolving deep personal struggles, which almost always have their roots in early family and childhood experiences. The ways in which we have learned to cope and protect ourselves in early relationships can often become the source of pain and distress in the present.

My specialist interests include working with people with who have experienced complex trauma which impacts on the way they relate to themselves, others and the world around them. This includes those whose experiences have left them with depression, anxiety, overwhelming shame, and extreme emotional reactivity in relationships.

I am also passionate about working with people with neurodivergent conditions, particularly autism. This includes those who suspect they may be on the spectrum but have not yet been diagnosed.

Each client I work with receives a unique and personal therapy experience based on my integrative approach and belief in “healing through meeting”. Approaches that inform my therapy include Schema Therapy, Mentalization Based Therapy, Contextual Therapy and attachment science.

Ultimately, I believe the value of therapy is in providing a safe and confidential space to explore powerful experiences and overwhelming feelings, and to identify and creatively utilise these as opportunities to work towards restoration and hope.

I am a BACP registered person-centred counsellor with experience working with adults in various settings, from counselling women in a women’s charity to working with men as a suicide prevention therapist.

While my approach is primarily person-centred, I am aware of the dangers of purism and have therefore attended professional development courses about trauma-informed approaches, brief solution-focused therapy and compassion-focused therapy. I have over ten years of experience working with neurodivergent adults and adults with learning disabilities.

I can offer a therapeutic relationship in which you will be deeply heard and accepted without judgement. Together we can work to make sense of what is happening for you right now, challenge narratives, explore core beliefs, build resilience, nurture self-compassion and awareness, and find new ways forward.

My focus is on supporting you through your challenges, and empowering you to strengthen your sense of self, so you can make the changes that feel right for you.

I believe you are the expert on your life and would love to help you believe that too. When we have the right support, things can change for the better, no matter how unlikely it may seem.

In my work, I draw on a number of therapeutic frameworks, using various evidence-based psychological therapies in my work, often in an integrative manner, adapted to client needs. The work I do encompasses milder to more severe and enduring mental health conditions, worrying and problematic behaviour, as well as relational and family issues. I have extensive experience supporting people with trauma, ranging from single-incident to more complex presentations.

I am also passionate about working with young people navigating the process of adolescence, and supporting parents with the challenges this may bring. I frequently work with neuro-divergent clients.

I am an HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist with over 10 years of academic and clinical experience in the NHS, local authorities, private and third-sector organisations. I have worked with individuals from a range of cultural and social backgrounds across the lifespan experiencing difficulties related to their mental health (stress, anxiety, low mood etc), physical health, relationships and identity.

My therapy practice integrates Narrative, CFT, ACT, Attachment-based & CBT. Much of my work to date has centred around whole family systems working alongside adults, children, couples, and carers. As such I am trained in additional evidence-based approaches including a foundational level qualification in Family & Systemic psychotherapy and other family approaches (Non-Violent Resistance & Incredible Years).

I have extensive experience in my NHS roles in providing therapy to young people and adults who have overcome significant trauma, social marginalisation and isolation. I am passionate about Community Psychology. This means I make sense of people’s difficulties through the lens of the various levels of context in which we exist, and how these impact mental health and well-being. I am passionate about hearing the lesser-told or seldom acknowledged stories about individuals that characterise their values and strengths.

I recognise that seeking out therapy takes a lot of courage and a sense of hope. I hope to co-construct with you a safe therapeutic experience that honours the expertise you hold about your life. My aim is to remain curious, non-judgemental and responsive to your needs.

Monika Lee

Associate - Psychotherapist
Online sessions only

I am a senior BABCP accredited CBT therapist and supervisor. I have over 13 years’ experience working in the NHS, treating patients with moderate to severe mental health problems. I am passionate about providing good quality care to all people who are struggling with anxiety, panic, low mood and trauma.

I am a highly trained and experienced therapist with an expertise and specialism in OCD. I have recently been involved in a research project run in collaboration with the Clinical Neuroscience Institute (BCNI) Cambridge University. I gained extensive experience working alongside leading clinical and academic experts in anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Related Disorders. I have worked with clients whose rates of recovery are excellent using techniques and strategies gained from working with such specialist teams.

I have worked with a range of clients who present with OCD in various guises, from mild to severe. OCD can present itself in ways that can completely clash with people’s values and be extremely debilitating. I would help you make sense of this and work towards removing the symptoms. I have found that many individuals aren’t aware that the issues they have are related to OCD, which can leave them feeling hopeless, frustrated, anxious and even depressed.

I am also trained, have vast experience and am very passionate about working with people who have psychosis. I am trained in CBT for psychosis (CBTp) which is associated with reducing the distressing symptoms of psychosis and improving the functioning of individuals. In addition, I have seen how CBTp can prevent and delay the transition into developing full psychosis.

Fiona Kennon

Associate - Systemic Family Therapist
In-person & Online sessions

I am an accredited and registered systemic family therapist (AFT, UKCP) with over ten years’ experience in facilitating change in adults and young people as clients, students, volunteers and colleagues working within health, education and social care. My work now is mostly with couples, families and individuals.

A systemic approach is about being relational; thinking about how everyone in the family (or other system) can help support change. It is non-blaming and curious and relies on the therapist joining the system for the appointment, noticing patterns of interaction and being curious about the values, beliefs and family stories held by clients.

The systemic approach lends itself to all sorts of problems people and families face. The approach promotes respect and works towards finding and amplify strengths each member of the 'system' holds, believing at its core, that the client is the expert in their own life.

One of my main interests lies in finding ways to help families impacted by physical illness (e.g. diabetes) to gain confidence in themselves and their ability to influence their situation.

I have additional expertise in teaching at Masters level, presenting and research. These have been complemented with professional development through further education and management responsibilities.

How therapy works

Psychological difficulties can develop for many reasons which is what we aim to identify within our sessions. We help you find ways to live your life despite the causes and alongside the symptoms.

We carry out an initial assessment that looks at the problems and difficulties you are having and identify your goals for therapy. Together we will agree how many sessions you may need and the therapeutic approaches that will be suitable to get you those results.

Costs for therapy sessions can be discussed upon enquiry.

Supervision

We are able to offer online Supervision. Please enquire for further details regarding availability and cost.
